Daniel Webster (January 18, 1782 – October 24, 1852) was an American lawyer and statesman who represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress and served as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. Alphonso T. Clearwater was a native of West Point, NY. He was locally educated and, in 1903, received an honorary degree from Rutgers University for distinction in public service. He was admitted to the bar in 1871. He served as the district attorney of Ulster County, NY, and as judge on the New York supreme court and court of appeals. He died in Kingston, New York.
